Electronic Pest Repellers

There are several methods of pest repellent employed by homeowners today. They range from the conventional physical barriers such as meshes and nets to the usage of chemical repellents and finally, there are the electronic pest repellants. Among all of these, the electronic pest repellents are one of the most effective ones but where they really win are the fact that they are completely safe, to humans, pets and even the rodents or pests. They are more of a prevention method rather than anything else. Unlike chemicals which can kill the pest or the physical barriers such as barbed wire that can injure the rodents, electrical repellent systems merely drive them away by creating an unfavorable environment inside the house.

Electronic pest repellents have only recently been invented and are in use for the past two decades or so. However, it is only recently that they have become popular, mainly due to the claims that they are environmentally friendly. This is actually true. There are no emissions given out, chemicals used and even dead animals to clean up. These devices simply use electricity to create an environment that is unfavorable to pests and rodents.

There are two categories of electronic pest control systems; electromagnetic and ultrasound. While the final effect is allegedly the same, they are fundamentally different in their working. An ultrasound pest repellent works by emitting low amplitude but high frequency pulses. The sound that is created by them cannot be heard by humans due to the inability of the eardrum to vibrate fast enough. However, common pets like insects and rodents and bats are capable of hearing these shrill sounds and are repulsed by it. Some pets like dogs are also prone to such sounds but if the pitch is very high, then even household pets are safe from the devices.

The other type of electronic rodent control devices, electromagnetic, manages to influence and change the inherent electromagnetic field of the wiring inside the house. This way, the pests are repelled by the constantly changing field to which they cannot adapt. The effect is not significant enough to affect humans.

The effect of electronic devices on pests is varied. Some researches claimed that there is no significant effect while others say that they do work in driving them away. In addition, these devices are known to reduce the mating frequency and thereby control pest population. Some of them were very effective on one type of insect while having no apparent effect on others. In a certain lab test, crickets couldn’t stand the ultrasound pulses but cockroaches lived on. One of the most popular electronic repellents is Riddex. The unique aspect about this is that it works as both ultrasound and electromagnetic repellent. Tests have shown that it is rather effective in keeping out rats and mice from homes and keeps the infestations at bay. In addition, if there is a rat or mouse population growing inside the walls, the electromagnetic plugin will drive them away by changing the fields of the wiring.

There is a lot of debate going on about the working process and the effectiveness of these electronic pest repellents. Some say that they are useless while other claim that they work. One thing is certain; there are some pests which are affected by it and there are those that aren’t. The best thing to do would be to use this in a combination with other methods of pest control to lower the emissions and cruelty to the animals.
